It was through the general public's fear of drugs that police were able to establish in our Courts many "irregular" uses of the law (notably illegal investigation techniques, breaking of search and seizure rules, the use of "hearsay" evidence and unidentified informants) which have now become standard practice throughout the justice system. In other words, the War on Drugs has become a very successful war on our civil liberties. As of September 11, 2001, the new bogie man is "terrorism." |
